Here's some news to jazz up your Wednesday: a new Screaming Trees album containing remastered versions of their final recordings will be released early this August. The album is titled "Last Words: The Final Recordings" and was recorded in 1998-1999.

This news is as posted on Barrett Martin's facebook page earlier today:
"Hey Folks, I'm quite happy to announce that last night, Jack Endino and I finished mixing a new Screaming Trees album. Its the unreleased album we recorded in 1998-99 and its finally coming out on August 2nd on my label. Mark Lanegan, Van Conner, Lee Conner, and myself felt that these final songs should be heard, and soon they shall be. Here's the album cover, done by the renowned artist Erin Currier."

As much as I love Dio (RIP) and 70's rock, Elf's self titled release from 1972 is is a fairly recent discovery for me. But god this is a fun release and definitely among the cream of the crop for the era. Definitely expect CCR or even Queen more than Rainbow or Black Sabbath - bluesy guitar licks, pianos and some really solid songwriting and feel good music that you can't go wrong with. I'll be jamming this one on repeat this summer.

bands with names like: melvins...mudhoney...nirvana

but on this particular recording (which was a little something they played on the radio back in 1986)...the members were krist novoselic on guitar...buzz osbourne on bass...and kurt cobain on the drums (and i'm hoping that i don't need to tell you which bands they came from)

they didn't have a set vocalist...so random members would just sing on random songs

On the last night of the recent Metalliance tour (Saint Vitus, Crowbar, Helmet), Saint Vitus debuted a new track called "Blessed Night". This show took place on April 5th, 2011 in Hollywood.

it's a good thing that those words were posted anonymously as i'd hate to show up at someone's house and ruin their day with some nude air drumming to some "moby dick"

the battle has raged on for centuries as to who was the first heavy metal band

was it led zeppelin?

was it black sabbath?

bands have broken up...friends have been lost...plates have been smashed at the dinner table...

and the only answer i give to anyone that has posed that question to me is: go and listen to each band's first album...then come back and talk to me

but honestly...when it comes to each band's recorded output...i can listen to all of led zeppelin's albums over and over again

when it comes to black sabbath...you only really need their first 6 albums (yeah...that's right...sit down guy wearing the MOB RULES t-shirt)

but i digress

i was first turned onto led zeppelin by one of my teachers back in high school...and the first time my parents heard me listening to them...it blew their minds as i was listening to things they had grown up with

you can't deny the powerhouse that is/was drummer john bonham

or the laid back bass from john paul jones

or the hot licks from jimmy page

or the caterwauling nonsensical vocals of robert plant

that's right....i just used the terms "hot licks" and "caterwauling"

also....like you've never stood in front of a mirror and sang along to "dazed and confused" into a comb

yeah...me either

also...why hasn't a cover band called ZEPPATH happened yet? (and yes...they would only cover zeppelin and sabbath)

News: New Track by Mark Lanegan Released For "Rage Untethered" Game

That's right, new Mark Lanegan material! The track is called "Burning Jacobs Ladder" and was released/created for the "Rage Untethered" game trailer. (Fortunately it really doesn't disappoint despite the sellout undertones. I don't really blame Lanegan for doing something like this for the money/hype, either). Anyways, I'm loving the new track and am waiting on pins and needles for his next solo album. You can stream and download "Burning Jacob's Ladder" for free here.

This album is called "Antares" and any heavy rock band with this hard of a Kyuss vibe is definitely up there in my books. The only downside to this is the occasionally terrible lyrics which is easy to overlook since the groove definitely makes up for it. And really, if you like riffs and groove and this album doesn't get to you then you must be dead inside. (Hell, I'm dead inside and it still got to me.)

this is the kind of action that you want going down during a backyard bbq (and it'll put bbq sauce in your beard...and if you don't have a beard already...it will make you grow one just so you can put some there)

i was supposed to see these guys play in chicago back in '03 with clutch and a band called flybanger...i was stoked as i had just gotten into sixty watt shaman...and i'm a HUGE clutch fan (as we all should be)...but...the girl i was with at the time apparently thought it would be a bad idea to drive 2 hours in a snowstorm (and yes...i called her a sissy)...so for weeks afterward i was taunted by 2 unused tickets...and from what i'd heard about the show...there were only about 20 people there

News: ATP "I'll Be Your Mirror" - New York 2011

So the lineup for ATP New York is starting to unravel again, but I'm not nearly as giddy as I was last year at this point. The lineup so far looks alright (Shellac, Bonnie Prince Billy) but I don't see myself buying a ticket and putting my life aside to travel to New York for it like I did last year. (Which was amazing.) I guess it's not really my cup of tea this year but I can see certain people being really stoked on this. Also, the festival is relocating to Astbury Park in New Jersey.

From ATP's website: "All Tomorrow's Parties returns to the USA this September in the new location of Asbury Park, N.J. bringing an I'll Be Your Mirror event to the iconic Asbury Park waterfront. For the inaugural American I'll Be Your Mirror, Portishead will curate the Saturday and Sunday and headline their first East Coast shows since 1998!"

Here's an album the good people from Orlandoom Promotions sent over to me - an almost shockingly crushing release called "Hymns For The Wicked" by Druid Lord. Although I hate the term "death doom", (it's slow so it must be doom, right?!) this is fitting of the description if anything is. I rarely post anything that gets sent to me anymore but this one kind of blew me away and is definitely worth looking into. Just really satisfyingly heavy stuff and it streams for free.

Tour Dates: Chris Cornell "Songbook" Solo Acoustic Tour

It was just announced that Chris Cornell will be doing a solo acoustic tour around North America this spring.

I have a good feeling that this will be a really good show for anyone who is a Cornell fan in any regard - in the end I will probably always be a one despite a few of his more unfortunate recent releases; and really, sitting through a few tracks about his family life and the inevitable "Black Hole Sun" singalong with lighters flaming in the air will likely be worth it just to hear some choice tracks. It's just a shame that the ticket prices are so exceedingly high (I guess Soundgarden reuniting somehow justifies the regular ticket price to triple?).

Well, there are a ton of things I've been meaning to blog lately but I recently discovered this band and everything else is getting pushed aside for now. This is "Sunlight" by Freedom Hawk. If you haven't heard this band yet you can go ahead and imagine a stellar combination of Fu Manchu blended with Ozzy era Black Sabbath and sprinkled with a hint of space rock that will tide you over until your next Hawkwind fix. (Everyone has those, right?)

Here's a really cool psych album by Ararat - a side project stemming from Los Natas - called "Musica De La Resistencia". I needed to give this album a listen after hearing their atmospheric trip of a track called "Gitanoss" on the Welcome To Meteor City comp and am far from being disappointed. "Musica De La Resistencia" is experimental and entrancing. Highly recommended!

Pop & Hiss: Since we’re just days into 2011, what’s the Melvins' main goal or resolution for the new year?

Buzz Osborne: The first goal is to actually survive as a band. That’s the first goal, which it is every year. We're just continuing to work and continuing to make music is another. And that encompasses a whole lot of things. A lot of it has to do with the fact that I don’t necessarily trust the outside world and their opinions. So it’s having the faith to be able to thrust yourself forward and make sure that as long as you think it’s good, everyone else will. And if you don’t, there’s nothing you can do about that.

Looking at the residency schedule that you guys have, the show seems to evolve every week. What conscious decisions went into planning the residency at the Satellite (formerly Club Spaceland)?

It’s one of the things I thought might be kind of a cool trend to get into, is this trend of bands playing whole albums. It gets people excited about the bands for one reason or another and it makes people feel like they’re gonna see something they don’t normally see. We’re always looking for something new and weird to do. So a residency for us at a club in L.A. is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.

To me, the only way to make that make sense is to have it be a little different [each week]. So this is one way to do it. So we’re gonna do normal Melvins stuff as well as specific records. We’re doing the specific records as normally as we would [laughs] … which is to say not exactly how everything is [on the record].

You’re opening the residency with a few of your classic releases, “Colossus of Destiny,” “Lysol” and the “Eggnog” EP. Because you have so much material, was it hard to choose which records you are performing this month?

We knew we were gonna do the “Houdini” record. That was kind of a gimme. But people like that record for whatever reason, and it’s popular as far as one of the ones we do. We’re gonna do two sets, so the first thing is gonna encompass songs that aren’t on those records. We’ll concentrate on newer material maybe. And then we’ll do the specific records for the second set. So it’s gonna be a long show. One of the shows is gonna include the Melvins 1983, which is gonna include our original drummer, Mike Dillard, and Dale [Crover] is gonna play bass. One of the shows we’re gonna open as the Melvins 1983 playing some of the songs we played in 1983, the way we played them in '83 and then sort of jazz 'em up.

Is playing the really old stuff exciting for you, being able to recapture that early Melvins vibe? Do you feel like it’s more of a gift to the fans who have all those old albums?

A lot of people will think it’s cool and others will walk away from it wondering why we bothered because they think it sucks. I’m used to that [laughs]. If I listened to people, even people I know, about what we were doing, I would’ve quit a long time ago. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about people, it’s that everyone has an opinion about those types of things. But rarely is it an opinion that can do me any good. Usually, the opinions aren’t about things that will make things better, it’s about what you’re doing wrong. I’m not interested in constructive criticism, believe me.

On a side note, I saw that recent test pressing of 'The Bride Screamed Murder' vinyl you guys put on eBay reached $460. It was funny seeing some people online bitch about the price, not realizing they were buying a special music artifact, not just an album. Do you hear about complaints like that from people and does it irritate you at all?

The public dictated the price. People were mad because it sold as much as it did, but that didn’t have anything to do with us. It’s almost like they think we should have sold it for less and then let someone else sell it for that much money. Look, if people wanna spend that kind of money for something on eBay, who am I to argue? I don’t make social commentary along those lines. And how does that reflect badly on me? I’m not setting the price on eBay. This is what they don’t understand. We are focusing our attention on art. The problem with all this is that we are selling less records than ever before. Why do they think that is? The reason is because people don’t buy records anymore. They steal them for free off the Internet. I’m not gonna complain about that.

So how can I figure out something where we can still continue to make cool stuff, continue to make records? The only thing I can think of is to focus on something you can’t download, which is art. The music is free, which is the most important thing. But for people that want something specific, who want something physical in their hand, we’re gonna make smaller runs of all that stuff and it’s gonna cost more money.

And for even being a pretty big band, you’ve been really adamant about taking the art you create down to a very boutique level.

This is all stuff that we make. I don’t send stuff off to China to have it made. We make it ourselves. We make our box sets. It’s all in-house and handmade. We’re talking limited edition of 100. It’s not because I only want to make 100. It’s because that’s all we can physically make. I don’t want to stay underground for just the cool people. I want everyone to like our stuff. I would love to sell millions of records, but that’s never gonna be the case. We do what we can, not what we can’t. I’m not a complainer, I’m a doer.

Even though you're playing without any opening acts,do you have any bands that you’re particularly excited about this year or that you’re listening to lately?

Oh God, I dunno, changes all the time. I’m not sure who the hip, underground bands are at the moment. But I’m always looking for stuff like that. Anything that can get me excited, I’ll happily buy it. Here’s the funny thing, I’ve never downloaded anything off the Internet ever. Not because I don’t want to, but because I’d rather just buy it. I don’t really trust the computer to keep my stuff safe. I still have the first CD I ever bought, sounds fine. Money well spent in the '80s. And the other thing is it’s not gonna last for a 100 years, but who cares?

I wish that all my music would just be deleted the second I die. I don’t even want a tombstone, I just wanna have my carcass incinerated and spread out over ground and then vacuumed up in a Hoover. Actually, I’d prefer burial at sea, or just lay out in the desert and let the animals have their way.

now some of you may have read the mention of the SGM interview with kevin rutmanin mentioned down yonder...and even though it's mentioned that he's played bass in the cows and the melvins...some of you may still be scratching your heads and saying "the cows? the melvins? what are those things?"

the cows were a band out of minneapolis,mn and were part of that whole noise rock thing back in the 90s

they released 9 albums...all mostly released on the amphetamine reptile label (this album being #6)

i chose this album because this is the band at the tippy top of their game (and SEXY PEE STORY is just an awesome thing to say...go on and try working in into everyday conversation: "will that be paper of plastic?" "sexy pee story" "excuse me?" "exactly")

and not only that...you even get a cover of the song "39 lashes" from the JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR album

all in all...this is a good way to spend some alone time

This record is far noisier and unpolished than their other material, but that just adds to how much rocking and face-melting occurs within these tracks. Self-restraint is let go as a total necessity to rock takes over. This was quite limited I gather, so here it is for your conveniance.

Members of this short lived project went on to form Witchcraft, Graveyard, Asteroid and Dead Man. Norrksen only released some demos, compilation tracks and this single in their short lived time as a group and so along with their "Armageddon / Little Lady" single I added on their compilation tracks - covers of "Pilot" by Blue Cheer and "Psalm 9" by Trouble. (Seriously, how did they know my favorite Blue Cheer and Trouble tracks? And how did they add flutes to Psalm 9 and make it sound okay?) I highly recommend this as it's really well done and you can hear little hints of what's to come in all these tracks which is cool if you're a fan of any of the groups Norrksen went on to form. Groove out.

Psych Trail Mix is one of the most dedicated zines I've seen in a while, and it focuses on exactly what you would expect it to (it covers everything from the God Bullies to the Beatles) with some unexpected and fun extras like the laugh inducing rant on things that should just stop at the end of the most recent issue. Issue #5 was just released and it's downloadable in PDF format so you can read it that way, or he encourages you to print it yourself to get the full experience.

This used to be one of my favorite things to listen to and now I'm rediscovering it.

Witchcraft are as mournful and hopeless as a doom band but have the chops of a 70's heavy rock band, and their album "Firewood" could easily be mistaken as a hidden gem from the era if you didn't know this was released in 2005. There are so many reasons to love what Witchcraft is doing here - the throwback to 70's heavy rock (which is one of my favorite things to see in modern bands when it's done well) and blantant Pentagram influence being the main ones in my books; in fact, they do a wicked cover of "When the Screams Come" on this album that will make your blood boil. They somehow even incorporate flutes and acoustic guitars on this release and manage to make it sound ethereal, not cheesy. The raw emotion and occult imagery of this album make it a gem. (...and those riffs, aye!)

"Satisfied Mind" by The Walkabouts - what can I say? You would be doing yourself an injustice by not listening to this. As a pretty visual person when it comes to music, I feel like this album would make an excellent soundtrack to walking along a dusty highway or through a desolate field. Here's the first, oddly obscure self titled EP by Earthride. This is definitely a more traditional take on the heavy, southern sludge drenched Earthride sound we know and love (aka. more Motorhead, less Crowbar) and this EP is probably the most satisfying listen i've heard from anything in this vein in quite sometime. Not many bands can achieve this level of grit and misery in a release while still having it resemble something fun. Whiskey soaked biker-doom. Get into it.

not many folks know of this band (well...most folks that i know)

i was first turned onto the band waaaaaaay back in the early 90s via the radio (believe it or not...they actually played music that somewhat decent back in the day...and i used to have a crapload of cassettes filled with it...yeah...i was one of those people)

if you've ever seen the movie HYPE!...flop was the band being recorded in a garage by kurt bloch (one of the guitarists from the band the fastbacks) during the middle part of the movie (their vocalist was wearing a gas huffer hat)

and if you've never seen HYPE!...well...this is the place where'd i'd usually go off on a rant...but i'm not gonna waste the words...you know what you did...

so what you get here is 7" of "pop punk" (but not of the blink 182 persuasion or their ilk...maaan...i feel shitty for even mentioning them here) that comes in the form of an original song and 2 covers (devo/the jam)

seeing as how the posting of some of the band's albums (here and there) seemed to go over pretty good...i now give you the band's debut album

but it comes with a warning: most folks would call this "sub par" compared to their later albums...and i'm inclined to agree...this has a more pop oriented sound (while still not sounding like anything else pop oriented)

and apparently the makers of the film FREEJACK deemed it good enough to include their song "break the spell" on the soundtrack (which is about the only good thing about the movie...the inclusion of the song...not the soundtrack...just wanted to clear that up...though there are a few decent songs on it)

so unless you want the FREEJACK folks to be better than you...i suggest you snag this up

also...you should seek out vocalist alain johannes' new (also his first) solo album SPARK which was released back in october of this year (unless you want me to be better than you)

and i put the words "last" and "show" in parentheses because the band has since gotten back together and played a few one off shows since then and are also possibly releasing a new album and touring

I'm missing this band play tonight and am staying in and listening to this album instead, so i'm deeming it appropriate to post. (Does it mean you're getting old when you miss good shows due to cold weather and being grumpy and overworked?). Reguardless of my own setbacks, I absolutely adore Quest For Fire and their style of chill psych rock. Sometimes meditative, sometimes rocking, their latest release titled "Lights From Paradise" is just an enjoyable and easy listen that will grab and keep your interest with entrancing twists and turns... think something along the lines of Dead Meadow breeding with Nebula to create an incredible lovechild. This is a beautiful album and I guess the fact that Quest For Fire are Canadian and signed to Tee Pee are just gravy. Vibe out.

Oh man. I finally get to post this one. Here is an album I've been meaning to post since I started this blog - "Platinum Jive" by Big Chief. I absolutely love this band and this is my favorite thing they released in their too-short existence as a group (well... aside from "Face". I think it's a tie). It's still catchy as hell but with a bit more grit and less funk (but still a copious amount) than their previously released work. It's a great mix of fun and grime and actually, in thinking about it further, I think a major part of the reason I'm so in love with this unique work is the track "John's Scared" which I'm basically addicted to. And "Locked Out". Ugh. Ok. Maybe it's just the entire album.

I ignored this bands existance for years for no real reason, until about 6 months ago when curiosity overcame me and I decided to give them a listen. I was immediately blown away and began kicking myself for all the time I had wasted. Upon first listen, you're bound to recognize the obvious Neurosis influence, but Minsk are much more than another band mimicking the Gods. Pounding tribal rythms, powerful riffing, really passionate vocals, and much more all come together in a thick layer of blissful psychedelia, resulting in one of the more creative and inspired records in this genre that I can think of. This resonates really deeply with me, musically and lyrically and I'm still kind of obsessing over it. Highly, highly reccomended if you're like me and skipped over this.

Here's an album by a 90's band from Chicago that sounds like they really should have been from Seattle. That's right, this is "Bunny Gets Paid" from Red Red Meat - an album that is widely considered to be some of RRM's best material and I can see why. You get a messy and sleepy sound combined with ripping, bluesy alt rock and Cobain-esque vocals, as well as some really chilled out, slow tracks which are truly the cherry on top of an already fantastic album. The genuine emotion behind the catchy alternative sound of this album has resulted in me having a huge soft spot towards it and believe me, you will too (if you don't already). Oh and, since I like you so much, I included the bonus tracks from the reissued deluxe version. (The first release was in '95). Enjoy.

Pure, skilled 90's doom metal at it's best.

I had some thoughts about not posting this, but fuck it.

Picture the raw, buzzing, hypnotic quality of lo-fi black metal. Now, instead of playing it on the peaks of a frostbitten mountain, take it down far below sea-level, buried deep within a forgotten cavern. Let the sound echo through the void. It would sound something like this tape. Really raw and captivating blackened funeral doom that radiates an IMMENSE amount of power. HIGHLY, highly reccomended but certainly not for everyone. (not my rip.)

When Adrian of Locust Tree Records sent this record over he described it as a "rifftastic masterpiece" and I really can't say that I disagree. This is a split from (Denver band) Kingdom of Magic and (Seattle band) Sod Hauler and since this is actually a pretty amazing split and also something that would be difficult to come across without a bit of friendly promotion, allow me to proudly uptalk this in the remainder of this post.

So yeah - here are two hard rocking bands that are really on their way to making their mark on the face of heavy music; Kingdom of Magic starts the split off with a raging couple of tracks with a noise rock touch and lots of mind bending, catchy riffs, then Sod Hauler turns the rock up even harder with some low end, doom-tinged heavy rock tracks. All in all the high levels of awesome riff-age and unexpected twists and turns in this split make it a really fun listen. Below I included a track listing and a download of "They Say She's Evil" by Sod Hauler. Listen, enjoy, and buy the 12" (go to the label's myspace page here... it's kind of worth purchasing for the album art alone in my mind) if you like what you hear.

Album: Mugison - "Mugiboogie"

I've been thinking about blogging "Mugiboogie" by Mugison for a while now but have always kind of been at a loss for a good description. (Actually, I'm still at a loss for a good description, but fuck it.) I discovered Mugison while he was opening for Queens of the Stone age a couple years back and it was honestly a perfect fit (and not just because they're label mates). So what can you expect? Well... Mugison produces some really fun, experimental, catchy and rocking tunes that are all over the place in the best way possible and you'll hear everything you want and didn't expect to hear. Really, I could dissect every track and go on for paragraphs but you should probably just listen for yourself. This album is great and fun for many reasons. (One of the more obvious reasons being that Mugison himself is bearded and Icelandic).

EP: Corrupted - Vasana + An Island Insane

This pair of EP's was released in 2007 in limited quantities, so here they both are in one conveniant place. These mark Corrupted's newest output to date, and I'm excited to see what eventually happens next. Anyways, if you're familiar with the band, you know what to expect: powerful, dark sludge metal, at times meditative ambience, coming together in a glorious celebration of sound that will leave you devastated by the end. Vasana is definitely the uglier of the bunch, with An Island Insane finishing with a nice droney(ugh) piece. These both prove that Corrupted are just as effective these days on the 7" format as they are with a monumental-sized full-length. With the cold weather setting in, now is the time to miserably curl up inside, and listen to these... Enjoy.

For a blog that's named after a Skin Yard track and specializes in posting Sub Pop singles, some might say that it's kind of a failure on my part that I'm only posting this Skin Yard/Sub Pop single here now.

Always better late than never, this is the fantastic "Start at the Top / Watch" single that was released in the late 80's and easily contains of my 2 favorite Skin Yard tracks. The first track is rippingly catchy and heavy with the strange vibes and rocking psychedelia that embody what I love so much about this band. The second track, "Watch", is eerier than the first but I promise you, just as raging. To summarize: this single will take you on a trip. Let it.
